Sewing with a Plan 2015 0.7

Combinations

The SWAP contest requires that all the garments go together. While there are three “sets” here, which stand alone, the three “wildcards” are garments which work with the three sets. Also I have designed my collection as a “wardrobe” in which everything goes with everything else.

When it comes to photographing the 11 garments at the end of the sewing period (the first few days of May 2015) I will want to put together some combinations that show the versatility of the wardrobe I have designed (mainly using purchased patterns) and made. Last year we were allowed no more than 8 photographs. So before I actually put thread to needle I want to just test out, in my imagination (and yours too!), how this might work.  At this point I need some drawings to show you what I mean.

Here is the list.

  • Garment 1 Squiggle jacket (top 1)
  • Garment 2 Squiggle trousers (bottom 1)
  • Garment 3 – Grey Linen shell top (top 2)
  • Garment 4  – Charcoal jacket (top 3)
  • Garment 5 – Charcoal skirt (bottom 2)
  • Garment 6  – White beetles Blouse (top 4)
  • Garment 7   – Turquoise Casual trousers (wildcard 1)
  • Garment 8 – Colourful shell top (top 5)
  • Garment 9 – Pink Skirt or Shorts (bottom 3)
  • Garment 10 – grey embroidered jersey (wildcard 2 – purchased item)
  • Garment 11 – Pink Boyfriend coat (wildcard 3)

The Sets

The sets are fairly obvious

  • 1 +2 + 3 = Squiggle set
  • 4 + 5 + 6 = Charcoal set (blouse not visible)
  • 7 + 8 = Casual set
  • 9 + 10 + 11 = Pink set (coat not illustrated)

The Showcased outfits

Which leaves four more outfits I am thinking of putting together. It’s a bit like Sudoko – you have to try to use each item once, but only once. These, with the sets, would create 8 photographs if that is what the rules allow. Is this the best combination?

  • 1  + 8 + 9  =  Shorts suit (blouse not seen)
  • 2 + 6 + 11 = Smart Saturday
  • 3 + 5  = Presentation
  • 4 + 7 + 10  = Weekend

Combinations I might actually wear

The other way to think about this is just to choose what I would like to wear, not caring how many times each item is used (beyond the first four matching sets). How about this?

  • 5 + 10 +11
  • 4 + 7 + 10
  • 7 + 10
  • 2 + 6 + 11

This combination leaves out 1, 3, 8 and 9, whereas the grey RTW jersey appears three times, and garments  7  and 11 appear twice.

Any other suggestions?

wow Kate, the drawings really give me the full layout of how wonderful this hole idea is!! Won’t it be fabulous to have all these items – “me made”. ready to mix up for any occasion!! I’m so impressed. Thoughtfully and artfully done….. as always. You inspire me so much…I want to do everything your doing..teeheee… I just love how this kind of sewing with a purpose really builds up a strong foundation for anything else to be added. Wow, so cool (as in your definition of “cool” envy………..I wish I was doing the same. —– a new year is just around the corner… I’ll put it on my “bucket” list. :~ )
    Have a great day!
Joyce ……. and Happy Holidays to you and your family!

I love pattern mixing, so maybe 2 and 8 together…though you are already mixing patterns with the beetles tops and other designs and 2 and 8 together may be too much. I find it difficult to say before I see them. 5 and 8 would also be pretty as I think you are planning a pale grey background for the colourful shell? Nice illustrations/croquis, by the way! For some reason my favourites of the sets may be the presentation set and the charcoal, casual and pink sets. In any case, there is so much to work with here that you will not lack choice.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Sometimes I need to have a fresh suggestion to see something. Of course it will be so much easier when the garments are finished. I think I have dropped the light grey painted item. This week I think I decided to go for a second shell top in recycled (tiered skirt) fabric. I will make the painted top, but probably not for SWAP. I just wanted to get it concluded – I needed it tied down before I start sewing (always reserving the right to change my mind). And I made decisions that were slightly more conservative/predictable/less risky. As in life I like to create a plan that is definitely deliverable!
